AMBHL Sunday

Calgary Bronks 3 - Calgary Northstar Sabres 2
The Calgary Bronks improve to 13-7-3 and to within 1 point of 2nd place Calgary Bisons and home ice in the first round.   Pretty important for the Bronks that they finish 2nd place just due to the fact that if they do end up playing the Bisons, they would have last change and can put a checking line like Elynuik's against the Shmyr/Merkley combo.  In this game, the Bronks got goals from 3 different players which included the game winner in the 3rd from defenseman Kade Jensen.  98 born G- Kyle Dumba turned aside 30/32 shots he faced for the win.  Austin Strand and Trey Mason replied for the Northstar Sabres.  G - Jeremy Phillips stopped 26/29 shots.

Red Deer White 6 - Red Deer Black 4
In an all Red Deer battle it was the 3rd place White knocking off the last place Black.  Black is starting to dig themselves a whole that they may not be able to climb out of in regards to making the playoffs this year.  They fell to 4-15-5 and sit 4 points back of Lethbridge, but Lethbridge has 3 games in hand now.  Red Deer White now sits in a tie with Airdrie for 2nd place and 8 points back of 1st place Medicine Hat who isn't likely to be caught.  Leading the way for White was Chase Olsen who scored twice, giving him a team leading 18 goals this season.  The next closes on the team has 9.  Red Deer Black got 2 goals from Layne Bensmiller, who now has 14 goals this season and is 2nd in team scoring now with 34 points.  Team scoring leader 98 F- Tyler Steenbergen has 37 points.  The next closes in point scoring on the team after Bensmiller and Steenbergen has only 10 points, showing the lack of depth on this team this year.

Fort Saskatchewan 6 - Edmonton K of C 4
In Fort Saskatchewan on sunday, it was the Rangers picking up just their 3rd win of the season, improving to 3-18-2 with the win.  They sit now just 3 points out of the 4th and final playoff spot in the Charger North of the AMBHL.  This in large part due to the similar struggles of  5-19-1 Spruce Grove and 4-18-3 Grand Prairie.  Whoever makes it will get to play Lloydminster as a reward!  For the Rangers on Sunday it was D- Aaron Kellogg leading the way with 2-1-3, giving him 8-5-13 in 20 games now.  For K of C, PJ Morrocco had a big game, scoring 3 goals and adding an assist.  Morrocco now has 10 goals and 21 points in 23 games.  Edmonton K of C sit 16 points out of a playoff spot in the Nitro North.  If they were in the Charger North, they would be in a playoff position right now.  Fort Saskachewan out-shot K of C 41-21.

Airdrie 6 - Okotoks 3
The Xtreme keep pace with Red Deer White and stay tied for 2nd place in their division, while Okotoks remain 2 points back of the Calgary Northstar Sabes for the 4th and final playoff spot in their division.  Airdrie got 2 goals from Troy Van Tetering to pace the attack, giving him 6-10-16.  98 F- Dillon Dube picked up 1-2-3 and now has 15 points, just 4 points back of team leader Ryan Barrow who leads with 19 points in 24 games.  For Okotoks, Mason McCarty was once again the offensive catalyst with 2-1-3, giving him a team leading 22-16-38.

St. Albert 3 - Sherwood Park 1
In a battle of two of the top teams in the AMBHL North, it was St. Albert coming out on top and now sit just 2 points back for 2nd place and home ice advantage in what was a possible first round preview.  The game was tied at 1-1 until just after the midway point in the 3rd period when Stephen Cretain would score his 4th of the season and GWG.  Joshua Perrott would score in to an EN to salt this one away.  The lone goal for Sherwood Park was Grayson Pawlenchuk's 17th of the season, who sits 2nd on the team behind 98 F- Sam Steel and his 22 goals.  St. Albert goalie Patrick Dea turned aside 33/34 shots!

Calgary Royals 4 - Calgary Bisons 0
The Calgary continue to pull away from the pack in the Calgary South Division or the Challenger South if you want to get more specific.  The Royals now sit at 18-2-3, having allowed just 42 goals in 23 games this season.  The next best in the South of the AMBHL are the 69 allowed by the Calgary Bronks.  The Royals sit 3rd out of 10 teams in the south for goals scored as well.  They would build up a 3-0 first period lead in this one, with goals by Allen, Rohl and 98 F - Montgomery.  G- Jake Morrissey turned aside all 29 shots he faced for the shut-out.  Morrissey sits 3rd in the AMBHL in GAA with a 2.17,  his team-mate Zach Sawchenko continues to lead with a 1.45 GAA and a .944 save percentage.

Edmonton MLAC 5 - Spruce Grove 2
In Spruce Grove, MLAC improve to 5-18-1 with a win over the now 5-19-1 Spruce Grove PAC Saints.  Spruce Grove, who are the hosts for this years western bantam championships still sit in the 4th and final playoff spot.  MLAC is 17 points back in their division and will miss the playoffs this season.  For MLAC in this one it was 98 - F Nolan Volcan with 2 goals, giving him a team leading 11 goals and his 18 points are 2nd to team all-star Anthony Sirianni.  For Spruce Grove, Conner Lukan scored once again, giving him 21-10-31.  The next closes on the team for goals is 8 goals for Luc Smith who also scored in this one.

Lloydminster 4 - Camrose 4
In Camrose, the Lloydminster Heat improved to 19-4-2 and now sit 2 points back of league leading SSAC.  Camrose with the tie now has 26 points, one ahead of Leduc who will be their first round opponent.  For Lloydminster, league leading goal man Andrew Koep scored 2 more, giving him 37 this season.  Koep now has 7 goals in his past 2 games.  Shawn Weber had a big game as well with 1-2-3, giving him 10-24-34 and now sits 2nd to Koep and his 52 points.  For Camrose, Clay Lang scored a hat-trick and now has 11 goals this year.  G- Spencer Burton stopped 43/47 shots for Camrose to earn the tie.

Edmonton SSAC 9 - Edmonton CAC 7
SSAC erase a 7-5 3rd period lead and score 4 goals late to win it 9-7 in a good ole fashioned western shoot-out.  SSAC who has the league's best record at 20-2-2 but sit in a 3-way race for the top stop in the Nitro North as St. Albert and Sherwood Park sit all within 5 points of one another.  For SSAC, 98 F- Tyler Benson notched 3-2-5, giving him 22-40-62.  His 40 assists lead the league.  League scoring leader, Giorgio Estephan picked up 2-4-6 and now has 30-42-72.  Estephan is on pace for 99 points!  For CAC, it was Matt Dykstra with 2 goals, giving him 15.  CAC now has 5 players with 15 goals or more.  Derek Brown and Andrew Marshall had 3 point games.
