WHL Subway Super Series Rosters Announced Today

With that said, I thought it would be interested to see who was drafted and how high in the WHL Bantam Draft.  It just goes to show once again that how high you were picked is not the be all and end all and that if you continue to work hard, your success will and does come.  Certain players were drafted high, especially the list of defenseman but some were listed and others lower picks.  Here is the breakdown:

Summary is:
2008 Draft Picks - 12 players or 41.3%
2009 Draft Picks - 9 players or 31.0%
2010 Draft Picks - 3 Players or 10.0%
Listed - 5 Players or 17%

Average Selection in the bantam draft is 42nd amongst drafted players.  If you factor in the non draftees, it drops way down.  There are a total of 16 first round picks in total with 6 being from 2008 and 7 from 2009, while 2010 has 3 players but you have to be pretty elite to be picked as a 17 year old.  Just the 2nd, 13th and 15th overall players have been selected.

Since team Canada is usually made up of primarily 19 yr old players or 1993 born players this season.  Here is the average selected of those players from that year:  31.6 average selection, what is should be is 12.0.

The 2009 age group has 9 players picked at an average selection of 23.1.  Really no surprise given the fact the team had the 1-4 picks being highly regarded dmen!

Of those defenseman selected, just 2 were drafted outside the top 23 as Keegan Lowe and Ryan Pulock were drafted low very different reasons.  Pulock was a smallish 5'7 bantam player and Lowe was playing in Minnesota at the time and it wasn't clear if he was headed for the WHL - until Edmonton picked him of course!

The forwards are a combination of high picks and listed players.  The Forwards seem to be the biggest miss in the bantam draft, year after year.  Several players were small at the bantam draft time age.  Interesting to note that the top 3 drafted forwards aren't on the roster as RNH is in the NHL/Pro, while Forsberg isn't on the team and Chandler Stephenson is injured and may or may not have been selected.

It is interesting to note that 7 of the toop 9 picks from the 1993 age group or 19 yr olds were selected.  The exceptions were #6 overall Brent Benson and #8 Mitch Topping.  Only players in the first round to make it after were Holmbert #21.
