MLAC win the Edmonton Invitational over KC

**UPDATE - Edmonton MLAC defeat Edmonton KC in the final of the Invitational this weekend. Alex Rotundo's 3 goals were not enough as MLAC defeated KC 8-4 in the final....MLAC got balanced scoring in the final and had another big game from its top line of Jevne/Volcan and Readman who combined for 9 points.  Rotundo led the tournament in scoring with 17 goals and 5 assists in 5 games.

Edmonton Invitational Tournament Awards
MVP - Alex Rotundo - Edmonton KC
Top Forward - Nolan Volcan - Edmonton MLAC
Top Defenceman - James Miller - Spruce Grove PAC
Top Goalie - Rylie Boychuk - Edmonton MLAC

The Edmonton Invitational Tournament is now in to its final day of action and there have been some huge performances thus far.  The tournament's "AAA" portion has just six teams taking part as the Southeast Hockey Hounds, Edmonton KC, Spruce Grove PAC, Fort Saskatchewan, Calgary Edge and Edmonton MLAC are attending.

As somewhat expected, the top ranked team in the tournament - Edmonton MLAC have rolled to a 4-0-0 record and find themselves in the final against the Alex Rotundo led Edmonton KC squad.  Edmonton KC has a record in the tournament of 4-0-0 as well.  The final will feature a few of the hottest players in the tournament as tournament scoring leader Alex Rotundo will go head to head against the big MLAC line of Jevne/Volcan/Readman.  Rotundo is coming off a fabulous performance in the semi-finals last night to which he scored all 6 of his teams goals in a 6-5 win over the Southeast Hockey Hounds.  Included in those 6 goals were the gtg and gwg in the final two minutes of play.  Rotundo currently leads the tournament with 14-5-19 in the 4 games played.  The MLAC top line of Jevne/Volcan/Readman all sit in the top 8 in tournament scoring with Jevne -10 points, Volcan 14 and Readman with 9.  They combined for 15 points in the semi-finals.

It should be a very interesting final this afternoon.

December 27, 2012 newsletter is ready

I hope everyone is having a great holiday and enjoyed Christmas and are enjoying the WJHC.  Some players are rising and making things very interesting.  There were several tournament over the weekend and several coming.  I wish you all a Happy New Year and wish you all safe travels!

Rankings
The December 27, 2012 newsletter is now ready.  In this edition of the newsletter, we update the Top 200 for 98's, Top 130 for 99's.  As well, stats have been updated for all players in the 98 and 99 age group with the exception of some PCAHA teams. The Top 40 western American players are updated.  The Rankings continue to be updated as scouts tournament reports come in and get reflected in the player rankings daily.

Interviews
We had a chance to speak with a power forward who models his game after Dustin Brown.  His size and shot are his main attributes and should have a very good chance at going in the top 2 rounds.

Next, I interview a very physical defenceman who is also putting up good offensive numbers this year.  He choose not to pick a player to model his game after as he wants to be his own defenceman.

Then we speak with a defenceman from one of the acadamies who see's the ice extremely well and has been one of the most rapid risers in the draft rankings this season.

Lastly, interviewed is a goalie who is flying under the radar but has all the tools to be a WHL draft pick and a dark-horse pick at that!

Team Rankings
The top 20 team rankings make its Sixth appearance in the newsletter since all leagues are now under way. We also list who their next games are against.

Mid Term Provincial Category Award Winners
With the season at about its mid point, we look province by province and hand out awards in several different categories from best skater to defensive forward and so on.  We polled several WHL scouts, our own scouts and others who are close to bantam hockey.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all

I would just like to take this opportunity to wish all the readers of the blog and donators to the newsletter a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday season.  If it weren't for the readers and all of you people, WEHP wouldn't exist and there simply wouldn't be an outlet for everyone to gather and talk bantam hockey.

This is the 3rd season of Western Elite Hockey Prospects and this season has been very interesting once again with many happenings across western Canada and the USA.  So with that said, I thought we should look at the top 10 story lines up to the point in the season.

Tyler Benson/Kale Clague battle for 1st overall
- Since the beginning of the season, there has been a 1A and 1B for 1st overall in the WHL Bantam Draft.  Benson is on a record breaking pace in the AMBHL and is on track for 152 points this season.  Of course, as we have discussed on several different occasions that Ty Rattie hold the record with 131 in the 07-08 season.  Kale Clague, now in his 3rd bantam season has been very dominant and also on track for a record breaking season for a defenceman.  It will likely depend on who is picking first overall for the draft as to who goes first.

Jaeger White to BWC
- The biggest buzz entering the season was the move of Jaeger White from Medicine Hat to BWC. White has shown to be one of the more talented players in western Canada and has his BWC squad rated #1 one again in Western Canada.  Having won the Medicine Hat Tournament, they will enter the St. Albert Tournament as the favorite.  White has been a huge factor in the success and provides much of the offence on what is primarily a defensive type team.  Of course we all remember the notorious 22-1 win over Cloverdale to which he had a 15 point game.

Nolan Patrick entering in the conversation for 1st overall
- Nolan Patrick was injured to the start the season and as a result was a bit of an enigma in that we really weren't sure how he would measure up to the top players.  Moreover, he wasn't with the Winnipeg Hawks at the Medicine Hat Tournament.  Since his return a few weeks ago, he has been head and shoulders above everyone in the Winnipeg AAA league and by head and shoulders, we aren't talking about his 6'2 175lb size!  Patrick has 30 points in 9 games so far.

SSAC dominance of the AMBHL
- The annual powerhouse SSAC Southgate Lions have gotten off to a 19-0-1 start and have allowed less than 2 GPG while scoring 7 GPG.  Led by arguably the top forward (Benson), one of the top defenceman (Quenneville) and top goalies (Skinner) - the Lions are able to dominate at the bantam level.  Some top rookies for the Alberta Peewee Champions from 11-12 have contributed.

MLAC forward Ryan Jevne with 2 - 6 goal games.
- Ryan Jevne has shown to be a dominate goal scorer at times this season with 2 games to which he has scored 6 goals in a span of a couple weeks.  He has also had 3 - 4 goal games this year.

Jordy Bellerive proving worthy of #1 ranking for 99 born players
- Bellerive has been one of the top offensive players in western Canada on one of western Canada's top teams.  He currently leads NSWC in scoring with 46-30-76 in 37 games and is a plus-44.  Fellow '99 born deserves an honorable mention on NSWC in G - Dorrin Luding with his 1.12 GAA and 14-2-2 record.

Vancouver Thunderbirds/PCAHA Banter
- This is for the message posters!  In the three years that WEHP has been in existence, we have never seen so much back and forth banter - both good and bad, in one season.  The Thunderbirds have a good enough team to be in the PCAHA Flight 1, case closed.  Are they a top team?  No.  Are they a good team, Yes!  Lets just leave it at that for the new year.  The PCAHA has been very entertaining with the 2 winter clubs dominating again and a tier of several teams to follow.

The Academies are top teams again
- POE, Notre Dame and OHA continue to be top teams and be scrutinized as a result.  I'm in agreement of what has been spoken about in regards to perhaps a "special division" of POE, Notre Dame, OHA, Edge School and heck even BWC and NSWC could be part of this division.  I'm sure all these teams could travel and have several mini tournaments throughout the season and even join the other top teams in Medicine Hat and St. Albert.  Something worth thinking about.

Lack of high end Saskatchewan Talent
- In the scouting world, it is evident that the common belief is that Saskatchewan is in a down turn for high end talent for the '13 bantam draft.  We would be stunned if a player went in the top 10 picks at this point and some have suggested that it may be a stretch in even having a first rounder from the province.  That is not to say there isn't depth, cause there is some depth, just not high end talent as in years past.

Northern Alberta - Cream of the crop for the draft!
The lower mainland dominated the '12 bantam draft with the likes of Barzal, Harkins, Gawdin, Musil, Ronning and Soy all high picks.  In fact, the province of BC had 11- 1st round picks and 6 of the top 8.  This year, the high end talent has clearly shifted to Alberta and more specifically Northern Alberta.  Benson, Clague, Steel, Quenneville all have a very good chance on being top 10 picks and the province in general has a chance at matching the BC output of 11 first rounders if you include the players attending academies.

Other strong players so far in the series have been Phillip Knies and Blake Bargar from Arizona.  Hank Crone and Max Gildon from Dallas.  Max Gerlach and Douglas Dendy from Colorado.  More to come tomorrow.

Weekend Primer

After a frantic and busy weekend last weekend with five tournaments taking place all over western Canada from Prince George to Victoria and all the way to Steinbach, this weekend will see primarily just league action in bantam hockey.

Denver Super 98 Series Preview
- Here is a preview from Chris Grosso who covers hockey in the western States.
Starting Friday, six of the top bantam major teams will compete in the Colorado Super98 Series for a chance to take home the championship title. In addition to the host team, the No. 5 ranked Colorado Thunderbirds, the tournament also features the No. 21 Indiana Jr. Ice, No. 11 Dallas Stars Elite, No. 18 Russell Stover, Arizona Bobcats and North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks.

Colorado Thunderbirds - The No. 5 Thunderbirds enter the tournament with a 22-3-5 record. In their last Super98 Series in St. Louis, they only lost once, but tied four times, with one of ties coming against the Indiana Jr. Ice. The Thunderbirds have some quality wins over some of the best teams in the country, including as the No. 8 Chicago Mission, No. 4 St. Louis Blues, and No. 9 New Jersey Devils. The Tbirds have won 10 of their past 11 games so they have a lot of momentum. They also defeated Russell Stover 9-0 earlier in the season, and they’ll hope for the same result. On offense, they have Trey Bagwell, Josiah Slavin, Brandon Yi, Trystan Isenhour, Brian Hawkinson, Dillon Scala, Ashton Fry, Jaden Anderson, Max Gerlach and Zach Walker. In net, Colorado has Austin Park and Douglas Dendy behind blueliners Anea Ferrario, Charlie Kiefer, Keegan Mantaro, Jovan ZImmerman, Bryan Yoon, and Cal Foote.

Indiana Jr. Ice - The No. 21 Indiana Jr. Ice (15-14-4) will be looking for a solid performance to jump them back into the top 20. The Ice struggled in the St.Louis Super98 Series, but they played top ten teams such as the Chicago Mission (No. 8 ranked), St.Louis Blues (No. 4 ranked), New Jersey Devils (No. 9) and Colorado Thunderbirds (No. 5 ranked). The Ice lost to the Arizona Bobcats (3-2) earlier this year, and they’ll look to get even with them this weekend. Indiana’s offense is made up of Joey Barone, Sam Swanson, Bob Fritsch, Jack MacNab, Sam Ruffin, Will Schlagenhauf, Ethan Stahlhuth, and Justin Whited, while it’s defense includes Darek Davis, Matt Sawyer, Reece Morris, Zach Lauderback, Bryant Gunn and Jackson Koblick, as well as goalies Nate Funk and Tyler Matthews.

Dallas Stars Elite - The No. 11 Stars will look to rebound from going 1-3-1 in the Philadelphia Super98 Series. Despite being 9-6-3, they have played some close games against No. 7 Long Island Gulls and Toronto Jr. Canadians (No. 2 Ontario), and have a win over the Lambton Jr. Sting (No. 14 Ontario), so they shouldn’t be underestimated. The Stars tied the North Shore Winter Club 2-2 earlier in the season, but this weekend they’ll hope to get the win. Kevin Graves and Ryan Keane have been excellent in net, only allowing a combined 41 goals all season so far with help from defensemen Trenton Lee, Azan Dorsett, Matthew O’Brien, Max Gildon, Parker Allison, and Drew Lennon. On offense, they have Solag Bakich, Cameron Donaldson, Grayson Celio, Mitchell Anderson, Kyle LeComte, Hayden Rivers, Jordan Porter, Mitchell McCoy, Hank Crone, Ethan Smith, and Daniel Patrick.

Russell Stover - This will be the first Super98 Series of the year for Russell Stover, who are currently ranked No. 18. They may only sport a 10-10-2 record, but they have played some of the best teams in the country, including No. 2 Shattuck St.Mary’s, No. 5 Colorado Thunderbirds. They also have a win over No. 13 Belle Tire and have tied the No. 15 Buffalo Regals and Peterborough Jr. Petes (No. 18 Ontario). The T-Birds beat them 9-0 earlier this year, and you can bet they’ll have retribution on their mind. Their roster is made up of forwards Taylor Schneider, Ben Schmidling, David Schmidling, Drew Pflug, Benner Norlin, Dane Johnson, Dawson Engle, and Willie Reim, defensemen, Jeff Stack, Austin Turley, Nick Woodward, Wesley Weissend, Jordan Wishman and Brian Hurley, and goalies Preston Kostlan and Cole Weaver.

Arizona Bobcats - The Bobcats haven’t played since competing in the World Hockey Invite last month, but own quality wins over No. 18 Belle Tire, as well as tournament opponent, the No. 21 Indiana Jr. Ice. Having only allowed 53 goals thus far, their defense, which is comprised of Ethan Roswell, Ethan Osburn, Jonathan Dube, Carson Bergstrom and Zach McKena, as well as net minders Trip Hutchinson and Barrett Rosser, will be a key component in their success. Their offense is made up of Blake Bargar, Landon Quinney, Joseph Crump, Cole Cunningham, Jared Sanchez, Trey Porter, Parker Coughlin, Tyler Schulz, Phillip Knies, Leighton Fisk, Alex Heinritz, Jeffrey Wade, and Sean Mallonee.

North Shore Winter Club - This will be the second Super98 Series for the Winterhawks. Earlier in the season they hosted the Vancouver Super98 Series, where they went 2-1-2. Other than the Dallas Stars, who they tied 2-2, they have not played any of their other tournament opponents. Currently ranked 4th in Western Canada, NCWC enters the tournament with an impressive 30-4-4 record. Forwards Tanner Versluis, Kayvan Mokhtari, Desi Burgart, Brady Chin, Brett Stapley, Jordy Bellerive, Tak Anholt, Dante Hannoun, Kevin Wong, Quinn Benjafield, and Justin Almeida have helped to amass a total of 226 goals so far, while goalies Cole Demers and Dorrin Luding have only allowed a combined 66 with help from Marcus Kwan, Clint Colebourn, Nolan Kneen, Ryan Pouliot, Conner McDonald and Jamie Mcintosh.
